Rory Farquhar-Thomson

I have always considered myself an artist (and musician) and am completely self taught. I live in Polperro and following retirement in 2019 I have taken to painting full time. I am inspired by the beauty of the landscapes and of course the sea and how the light and shadows change with the seasons. From the golden glow of a morning in the harbour as the sunlight hits the cottages on the steep hillsides of the village to the beauty of a full moon and clouds with the roofs of the village picked out and the moonlight playing on the water. I almost always use oil paint as I find it more responsive and I am able to create more depth and balance in my paintings. Early mornings and sunny days, misty evenings and dark nights all feature in my work. I hope to capture some of the charm and beauty of this area and create works of art that will inspire people with a love of this part of Cornwall and give them a lasting memory of this special place. I love many different artists although I am particularly inspired by artists like the Russian romantic painter Ivan Aivazovsky and the English Victorian master of nocturnal scenes and urban landscapes Atkinson Grimshaw.
